Photographing birds in flight is one of the most rewarding—and challenging—areas of wildlife photography. The subject moves quickly, changes direction without warning and may pass in seconds from a clear sky to a complex background of vegetation, rocks or water.

Successful flight photography requires more than fast autofocus and a high burst rate. You must find the bird quickly in the viewfinder, follow its movement smoothly, choose the right shutter speed and pay attention to light, background, exposure and composition. Above all, you need to observe the bird’s behaviour and anticipate what it is likely to do next.

In this practical guide, I share the techniques, camera settings and field experience I use during my photographic safaris.

What you will find in the complete guide
  1. Recommended starting settings for birds in flight
  2. Choosing the right camera, lens and support
  3. Continuous autofocus, AF areas and subject tracking
  4. Shutter speed, aperture, Auto ISO and exposure
  5. Finding the bird quickly and following its movement
  6. Composition, wing position, light and background
