The Great Migration calving season in Tanzania is one of Africa's most spectacular wildlife events and one of the finest periods for wildlife photography. Every January, the short-grass plains of Ndutu and the Southern Serengeti become the centre of the Great Migration as hundreds of thousands of wildebeest gather to give birth, attracting exceptional numbers of predators and creating one of the continent's most dynamic natural spectacles.

This photographer-led Great Migration safari has been carefully designed to follow this extraordinary period while also exploring some of Northern Tanzania's most iconic wildlife destinations. Over nine days, the itinerary combines Tarangire National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater, three full days in the heart of the Great Migration calving season around Ndutu, and the Central Serengeti.

The combination of these four destinations creates exceptional opportunities for wildlife photography. Tarangire offers giant elephant herds and baobabs, Ngorongoro provides extraordinary wildlife density, Ndutu delivers the drama of the calving season and predator behaviour, while the Central Serengeti completes the experience with classic plains, kopjes and abundant wildlife.

Using a purpose-built photographic safari vehicle and travelling in a small group of only four participants maximises comfort, flexibility and photographic opportunities. Accompanied throughout by wildlife photographer Gabriel Haering, participants benefit from field coaching, image reviews and a relaxed pace designed around light, wildlife behaviour and strong photographic compositions rather than simply covering distance.

9-Day Great Migration Safari Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport and Transfer to Tarangire National Park

After arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport, transfer to Tarangire National Park. Following lunch at the lodge, enjoy your first afternoon game drive among the park's iconic baobab trees and large elephant herds. An ideal introduction to the wildlife and landscapes of Northern Tanzania.

Day 2 – Full-Day Safari in Tarangire National Park

Spend a full day exploring Tarangire's river valleys, acacia woodlands and open savannahs. The park is renowned for its elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras and exceptional birdlife. Throughout the day, the itinerary remains flexible to make the most of changing light and wildlife activity.

Day 3 – Another Day in Tarangire

A second full day provides the flexibility to revisit the most productive areas and adapt the safari to current wildlife sightings. Travelling in a small group allows more time at each encounter, creating excellent opportunities for wildlife photography and memorable elephant images.

Day 4 – Tarangire to Karatu

Enjoy a final morning game drive before travelling to Karatu, located near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Along the way there is time to visit local craft shops offering Tanzanite, wood carvings and safari souvenirs. The afternoon is free to relax, review photographs and prepare for the Ngorongoro Crater.

Day 5 – Ngorongoro Crater and Transfer to Ndutu

Descend into the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater, home to one of Africa's highest concentrations of wildlife, including lions, elephants, buffaloes, hippos and, with some luck, black rhinos. In the afternoon continue to Ndutu, where the Great Migration calving season unfolds across the plains.

Day 6 – Ndutu and the Great Migration Calving Season

Spend the day in the heart of the Great Migration calving season in Ndutu and the Southern Serengeti. Thousands of wildebeest calves attract lions, cheetahs, hyenas and jackals, creating outstanding opportunities to photograph predator behaviour and one of Africa's greatest wildlife spectacles.

Day 7 – Full-Day Safari in Ndutu

A second day in Ndutu allows us to follow the movements of the Great Migration and adapt each game drive to the latest wildlife activity. Every day is different, offering fresh opportunities to photograph newborn wildebeest, zebras, predators and dramatic interactions across the open plains.

Day 8 – Ndutu to Central Serengeti

Travel north through the Serengeti on a full-day game drive, enjoying spectacular landscapes and frequent wildlife encounters along the way. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants and giraffes are all possible as we move from the calving grounds towards the classic plains of the Central Serengeti.

Day 9 – Departure from Seronera

After breakfast, transfer to Seronera Airstrip for your scheduled domestic flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport, connecting with your international departure. The safari concludes with unforgettable memories of the Great Migration in Tanzania and one of Africa's finest wildlife photography experiences.

Safari Vehicle

Open Safari Vehicle in Tarangire National Park

In Tarangire National Park, we use a specially designed open safari vehicle to give photographers better visibility, more freedom of movement and a more immersive wildlife photography experience.

Tarangire National Park

Open Safari Vehicle for Wildlife Photography

This open safari vehicle is ideal for a photographic safari in Tanzania. Unlike a standard enclosed vehicle, it offers open sides, unobstructed views and no window reflections. Although the vehicle can accommodate seven guests, we limit it to four photographers to provide more comfort and better shooting space.

  • Maximum four photographers
  • Open sides for unobstructed photography
  • No side-window reflections or visual obstructions
  • Excellent visibility in all directions
  • More space for cameras, lenses and bean bags
  • Ideal for elephants, birds, baobab landscapes and general wildlife photography

Why this matters for photography

The vehicle can make a real difference during a photographic safari. More space, better angles and faster reaction time help photographers concentrate on light, composition and wildlife behaviour instead of struggling with limited visibility.

Safari Vehicle

Adapted Land Cruiser for Ngorongoro Crater

Inside the Ngorongoro Crater, safari vehicles must comply with specific park regulations. For this part of the itinerary, we use a standard enclosed Land Cruiser, but with reduced occupancy to give photographers more space and better comfort.

Why this matters in Ngorongoro

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Tanzania’s most spectacular wildlife locations, but it also has strict vehicle rules. By reducing the number of photographers in the vehicle, we preserve space, comfort and flexibility while respecting the regulations of the conservation area.

Dedicated Photographic Safari Vehicle in Ndutu

In Ndutu, during the Great Migration calving season, we use a dedicated photographic safari vehicle designed specifically for wildlife photographers, long lenses and fast-changing predator action.

Why this matters in Ndutu

In Ndutu, wildlife situations can change in seconds. A cheetah may start moving, lions may approach the herds or newborn wildebeest calves may appear on the open plains. A dedicated photographic vehicle helps photographers react quickly, compose freely and make the most of one of Tanzania’s most exciting wildlife photography areas.

Who is this safari for?

This Great Migration calving season safari has been created for photographers and wildlife enthusiasts who want to experience one of Africa's most extraordinary natural events while travelling in a relaxed small-group safari with expert photographic guidance.

Rather than focusing on simply observing wildlife, the itinerary is designed around understanding animal behaviour and creating stronger wildlife images. During January, the Ndutu plains and the Southern Serengeti become the centre of the Great Migration, where thousands of wildebeest calves are born every day. This remarkable concentration of prey attracts lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas and jackals, creating exceptional opportunities to photograph natural predator behaviour.

The journey combines four very different ecosystems. Tarangire National Park is renowned for its ancient baobabs, large elephant herds and excellent birdlife. The Ngorongoro Crater offers one of Africa's highest wildlife densities within a spectacular volcanic landscape. Ndutu becomes the stage for the Great Migration calving season, while the Central Serengeti provides the classic African plains and iconic wildlife that have made the Serengeti famous throughout the world.

This safari may be particularly appealing if you:

✓ wish to photograph the Great Migration during the calving season
✓ enjoy wildlife photography and would like to improve your skills in the field
✓ are interested in predator behaviour rather than simply collecting species
✓ appreciate travelling with a maximum of four participants
✓ value guidance from an experienced wildlife photographer throughout the journey
✓ enjoy sharing photography and wildlife experiences with like-minded travellers

No advanced photographic experience is required. Whether you use a DSLR, mirrorless camera or advanced bridge camera, the emphasis is on enjoying the experience, improving your photography and returning home with memorable wildlife images from one of Africa's greatest natural spectacles.

Why January Is The Best Time To Visit Ndutu

January is one of the most rewarding months to visit Northern Tanzania and witness the Great Migration calving season. During this period, the Ndutu region and the Southern Serengeti become the centre of one of Africa's greatest wildlife spectacles, as hundreds of thousands of wildebeest gather on the nutrient-rich short-grass plains to give birth. For wildlife photographers, this brief seasonal event offers an exceptional combination of abundant wildlife, dramatic predator behaviour, beautiful green landscapes and constantly changing photographic opportunities.

The Heart of the Great Migration Calving Season

Between January and early February, enormous herds of wildebeest arrive in Ndutu and the Southern Serengeti to give birth. Thousands of calves may be born every day, creating one of the highest concentrations of wildlife found anywhere in Africa. The calving season is a crucial stage of the Great Migration, making this one of the most exciting times to experience the Serengeti ecosystem.

Exceptional Predator Behaviour

Where thousands of newborn animals are present, predators quickly follow. Lions, cheetahs, leopards, spotted hyenas and black-backed jackals patrol the plains, creating outstanding opportunities to observe and photograph natural predator behaviour. Every game drive offers the possibility of witnessing hunting strategies, protective mothers, territorial interactions and dramatic moments that define the cycle of life on the African plains.

Outstanding Wildlife Photography Opportunities

Few destinations offer such a remarkable variety of wildlife photography opportunities within a relatively small area. The combination of newborn wildebeest, zebra foals, active predators and abundant birdlife provides an ever-changing photographic environment. Whether capturing intimate portraits, fast-moving action or wide landscape compositions, photographers can work with an extraordinary diversity of subjects throughout the safari.

Green Landscapes of the Southern Serengeti

Unlike the dry-season months, January transforms Ndutu and the Southern Serengeti into vibrant green grasslands. Seasonal rains bring fresh vegetation, wildflowers and dramatic cloud formations that create beautiful backgrounds for wildlife photography. The lush scenery adds colour, atmosphere and depth to every image while enhancing the visual contrast between wildlife and landscape.

Soft Light and Dynamic Wildlife Activity

January often provides clear mornings, soft golden sunrise light and warm evening colours that are ideal for photography. Combined with the constant movement of the Great Migration and the high concentration of wildlife, every day offers new possibilities to photograph unique behaviour, changing weather conditions and memorable African landscapes.

A Photographer-Led Great Migration Safari

Travelling with a small group and a photographer-led safari allows far greater flexibility than traditional game drives. More time can be dedicated to observing wildlife behaviour, waiting for the best light and positioning the vehicle for stronger compositions. Daily photography coaching and image reviews help participants improve their technique while experiencing one of the world's most extraordinary wildlife events.

An Unforgettable Wildlife Experience

For photographers and wildlife enthusiasts alike, January offers one of the finest opportunities to experience the Great Migration calving season. The combination of Ndutu, the Southern Serengeti, abundant newborn wildlife, spectacular predator behaviour and exceptional photographic conditions makes this safari one of the most rewarding wildlife photography experiences available anywhere in Africa.

Great Migration Calving Season Safari: Park Comparison

This comparison focuses on the four key areas of the January photographic safari: Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, Ndutu and Central Serengeti. The scores are practical indicators from a photographer’s perspective, considering wildlife, big cats, landscape, crowds, weather and bird photography.

How to Read the Scores

Score interpretation: 9–10 = exceptional photographic value, 8 = strong positive factor, 5–7 = good or context-dependent factor, 1–4 = limiting factor.

Crowd score: a high score means lower crowds and a better photographic experience. A low score means higher visitor pressure.

Dark green = 9–10 Light green = 8 Light yellow = 5–7 Light red = 1–4 Blue border = safari highlights

Photographer Value by Month – Northern Tanzania Safari Seasons

This table gives a simplified month-by-month photographer value score for Northern Tanzania, including the calving season, Mara River crossing period, dry season and long rainy season.

Month Main Photographic Situation Crowd Rating Photographer Value
January Calving season begins, green landscapes, predators active 6.5 9.6
February Peak calving season, newborn wildebeest, intense predator activity 6.0 10.0
March Late calving season, dramatic skies, green backgrounds 8.0 9.2
April Long rainy season, lush but less predictable, difficult logistics 9.5 6.0
May End of long rains, low crowds, very green scenery, variable access 9.0 7.0
June Transition to dry season, improving visibility, pleasant conditions 7.0 8.0
July Dry season, strong wildlife viewing, migration moving north, high visitor density 4.0 8.4
August Mara River crossing period, dramatic action, very high visitor density 3.0 9.0
September Mara River crossings continue, excellent action, dry landscapes, high crowds 3.5 9.2
October Late dry season, wildlife concentration, harsher light, dry backgrounds 5.0 8.2
November Short rains, greener landscapes, birds, lower crowds, variable weather 8.5 8.1
December Green season builds, migration returns south, good bird photography 6.5 8.6

Crowd Rating: a higher score means fewer vehicles and a more exclusive photographic experience. A lower score indicates higher visitor density.

July to October is the traditional high season in Northern Tanzania. Wildlife viewing is excellent, but visitor density is usually highest in the Serengeti and especially in the Ngorongoro Crater. Photographers may encounter many vehicles at popular sightings, particularly around big cats, river crossings and iconic viewpoints.

August and September coincide with the famous Mara River crossing period. River crossings can produce spectacular action photography, but they are unpredictable and often attract large numbers of vehicles. Around active crossing points, the northern Serengeti can become particularly crowded.

January and February offer one of the best overall balances for wildlife photographers: Great Migration herds, newborn wildebeest, predator activity, green landscapes, dramatic skies, excellent bird photography and lower visitor pressure than the traditional summer high season.
