Baobabs, Buffaloes & Remote Wilderness
Ruaha & Katavi - June 2027
A 7-day fly-in photographic safari through two of Tanzania’s wildest and least conventional safari destinations: Ruaha National Park and Katavi National Park. This journey is designed for photographers and wildlife lovers who are looking for space, atmosphere, remoteness and powerful wildlife encounters far away from the more travelled safari routes.
Ruaha and Katavi work beautifully together because they offer two distinct photographic worlds. Ruaha brings baobabs, dry riverbeds, open country, elephants, predators and dramatic light. It is a park where wildlife photography is often shaped by space, dust, warm tones and the raw feeling of Southern Tanzania.

Katavi adds another dimension: an even stronger sense of isolation, broad floodplains, hippo-filled waterways, large buffalo herds, crocodiles, birds and a rare atmosphere of wilderness with very low tourism pressure. It is one of those places where the landscape itself becomes part of the photographic story.

By flying between the parks, this safari avoids long road transfers and keeps the focus where it should be: in the field, with time for light, behaviour, patience and composition. The itinerary is especially suited to photographers who are not looking for a standard checklist safari, but for a deeper and more atmospheric visual experience.

This departure is limited to a very small group, allowing more space, better positioning and a quieter rhythm in the vehicle. The goal is not simply to see wildlife, but to return with stronger, more personal images from two of Tanzania’s most authentic wilderness areas.

Why This Itinerary Works So Well for Photography

Ruaha and Katavi complement each other extremely well because they offer two different photographic worlds, yet remain deeply coherent with one another.

Ruaha introduces the journey with strong and scenic landscapes: baobabs, seasonal riverbeds, rocky areas, open savannah, elephants, predators and often intense, dramatic light. It is a park where photography is not limited to close-up wildlife portraits, but allows animals to be placed within a powerful, recognisable and highly photogenic environment.

Katavi adds an even more remote and wild dimension. Its vast floodplains, concentrations of hippos, crocodiles, large buffalo herds, birdlife and sense of isolation create a rare atmosphere, far from the more travelled safari circuits.

The result is a short but very intense safari, with an extraordinary variety of landscapes, light, subjects and atmospheres: from the scenic strength of Ruaha to the deep, almost primordial wilderness of Katavi.

Itinerary Overview

The journey begins with a flight from Dar es Salaam to Ruaha National Park, where the first part of the safari is dedicated to one of the most characteristic landscapes of Southern Tanzania. Baobabs, seasonal riverbeds, open savannah, elephants, giraffes, predators and dramatic light offer an ideal setting for atmospheric wildlife photography.

A subsequent internal flight connects Ruaha with Katavi National Park, one of Tanzania’s most remote and least visited wilderness areas. Here, the landscape changes completely: vast floodplains, pools frequented by hippos and crocodiles, large buffalo herds and a strong sense of isolation dominate the photographic experience.

This transition from Ruaha to Katavi is one of the great strengths of the journey. In just seven days, the itinerary combines two very different visual identities: the landscape power of Southern Tanzania and the deep wilderness of the west of the country.

Who This Safari Is For

This departure is ideal for photographers and wildlife lovers who want to experience an authentic, remote and photographically rich journey between Ruaha and Katavi. It is designed for those looking for open spaces, atmosphere, light, animal behaviour and strong landscapes, far from the more conventional and crowded safari circuits.

The safari is suitable for experienced photographers, but also for passionate travellers who want to create better images, have more time at sightings and experience nature with a more attentive, patient and respectful rhythm.

Ruaha offers a powerful introduction to Southern Tanzania, with baobabs, elephants, predators and dry-season landscapes. Katavi adds an even wilder and more isolated dimension, with floodplains, buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles, birds and a strong sense of wilderness.

It is therefore a safari for those who are not simply looking for a list of animals to see, but for a deeper photographic experience built around light, environment, composition, waiting and authenticity.
